We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
To really get the full scope of this verse, consider the divine perspective of "hope." In Hebrews 11:1 it says that "faith is the substance for things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
In other words, hope is activated by faith. However, before you get to hope, your faith is always tested. You have to endure thru the trials which gives you character over time then you are rewarded with hope.
With that said, we must understand that hope has a cost. Real hope is not a "feeling" you just float in and out of. You must hold steadfast to your faith to produce true hope. The kind of hope that surpasses all understanding.
