Ephesians 4:29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
This is another one of my favorite verses. Have a problem with a fouled mouth? Memorize this verse and the Holy Spirt will help you guard your it.
I remember when I was young in high school, I never said bad words. Instead, I said words like "gosh darn." Seriously!
But then I joined the Army and right there began my days of fouled mouth speaking. In fact, I made quite a sport of cursing. I go back and think of those days when my kids were young and I didn't even spare them from my hellish tongue.
But then one day I came across this verse and meditated on it for weeks and memorized it. It has become one of the weapons of my personal spiritual warfare.
Today, my flesh can certainly keep up with any sailor. But my spirit strives for words that build up my brothers and sisters. In a world full of profanity, it is always refreshing to meet someone who doesn't believe they need profanity for emphasis in their speech.
Speech without profanity is evidence of self-control (meekness) and when you can achieve this, you walk into a new level of walking in the spirit.
Matthew 5:5 says "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."
